Column: Migration pressures on local communities

Illegal small boat crossings have risen in recent years, reaching almost 41,500 last year alone, and over 4,400 so far this year. While this is a complex issue with a multitude of consequences, front and centre of the Government’s concerns should be the impact this is having on communities like ours.

Across the country, more people are arriving via what the Home Office describes as ‘irregular routes’, placing growing pressure on local services, accommodation, and community cohesion. Here in Grantham and Bourne, residents have understandably raised concerns about how this is being managed and what it means for our area.

While some of course will be fleeing difficult circumstances in their home countries, I have always been clear that those in need of support should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach. It is entirely reasonable to conclude that individuals choosing to illegally enter our country across the Channel from France - a safe country - are primarily motivated by economic factors. Our compassion to help people globally in need must be matched with a system that is fair, controlled, and sustainable.

When crossings increase, the consequences are felt in towns like ours. Under the Government’s dispersal scheme, South Kesteven has been set a target of accommodating 301 asylum seekers. So far, 255 individuals have already been accommodated.

The way this has been delivered has raised serious concerns. Private contractors, such as Serco, have been contracted by the Home Office to secure residential accommodation. Due to cost and availability difference across our corner of Lincolnshire, this has led to a heavy concentration in Grantham and use of Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs). Whether you agree with the Government’s system or not, rather than being evenly dispersed as they say they are aiming to do, this has led to the overwhelming majority of asylum seekers being imposed upon just one town.

While I have questioned Home Office Ministers for further details about who is being accommodated in our area, I understand that accommodation has been sourced by Serco across 69 properties, but with only 3 accommodating families. This has been imposed by the Government on our town, despite a clear majority of residents opposing mass immigration at the ballot box. As a result this has left many residents feeling extremely angry.

I have heard directly from constituents who are concerned about the pace of change, the impact that increasing numbers of HMOs have on the community, the strain on local services, and the lack of communication. These concerns are not because of a lack of compassion, but about fairness and ensuring that no single community carries a disproportionate burden of the challenge we face on this.

We have seen in other parts of the country what happens when systems are not properly managed, where poor planning and uneven distribution lead to increased pressures, and where poor communication has created community tension. We must not allow that to happen here.

Ultimately, this issue requires a balanced approach. We need to reduce dangerous crossings, deter people from entering our country illegally and deport those who do, all while ensuring that asylum is only ever granted to those truly in need. Getting this right is essential to maintaining public confidence and ensuring the system works for everyone.

Column: The Cost of Fertiliser

I am proud to represent one of the great farming counties of England. Across Lincolnshire there are over 3000 farms, and put together they produce a remarkable proportion of what ends up on British plates.
