One of the things I enjoy most about representing Grantham and Bourne is seeing first-hand the strength of our local communities. Last weekend was a wonderful reminder of that as I attended the Grantham Sing Along & Fun Day, celebrating Grantham's bid to become Town of Culture 2028.
It was fantastic to see so many local people coming together for such a positive occasion. Hosted by Grantham International Prep School, the event saw local schools perform the new Grantham anthem, "GOSH, it's Grantham", (a remarkably catchy number!) while families enjoyed a range of activities showcasing the very best of our town. It was encouraging to see such a wide range of organisations represented, from the police cadets and Grantham's Barracks to local craft stalls and community groups.
Events like this remind us that culture is about far more than galleries or theatres. It is about the people who give their time to local organisations, the volunteers who organise community events, the musicians, artists and performers who bring places to life, and the pride we all take in where we live.
That is exactly why Grantham's Town of Culture 2028 bid matters. It is an opportunity to showcase everything that makes our town special while helping to attract new visitors, support local businesses, encourage investment, and inspire the next generation. Our rich history sits alongside a thriving community spirit, and together they create something that is well worth celebrating.
Culture also has an important role to play in strengthening communities. Bringing people together through music, heritage, arts and local events creates opportunities for people of all ages to get involved, develop new skills and build stronger connections with one another. It helps foster the sense of belonging that makes Lincolnshire market towns like Grantham such great places to live and work.
I would particularly like to thank Cllr Tim Harrison for the notable effort he has put into organising the Sing Along & Fun Day and for the enthusiasm and dedication he has shown in championing Grantham's Town of Culture 2028 bid. Successful bids rely upon passionate local support, and it was clear from Saturday's event just how much hard work has gone into bringing people together behind this exciting ambition.
Grantham has every reason to be proud of what it has achieved and optimistic about what lies ahead. The enthusiasm on display last weekend showed a town full of creativity, ambition, and community spirit. I look forward to seeing the Town of Culture 2028 bid continue to gather momentum, and I will continue supporting opportunities in Parliament and in our community that back our bid and help Grantham thrive for many years to come.
